The Christian Faith Questioned
This document is arranged as a topical FAQ for the purpose of answering questions, complaints, or accusations about the Christian faith. What Christian faith? It is the historic Christian faith as found in the Bible; faith in the one and only Jesus Christ described in the four Gospels. This faith is explained in the Book of Concord and summarized in the Small Catechism. If you have a question, complaint, etc. that is not listed here, please feel free to insert it on this page. The idea is that someone will eventually have the opportunity to respond to it. If you need more than a paragraph for your "question," please insert a WikiWord into the question part and expand to your heart's content on another page.
My intention is that all answers and responses be correct, of course, but that does not mean that everyone will be convinced of this. This does not demonstrate a weakness in the answer or response. Rather, it may illustrate a basic difference between faith and unbelief. The worldview of faith accepts that many things cannot be understood, experienced, or even known until they are believed. It may also illustrate the tension between the unbelieving human nature and the reborn nature which exist simultaneously in every Christian.
Appropriate material for these pages will use polite language for public consumption, and show respect for the beliefs of others, even when the writer is attempting to demonstrate that those beliefs are ill-founded. If you are reading this, you are invited to participate by writing something to these pages or editing existing content to make it appropriate.
Coming from Non-Christians
- ChristianityUnreasonable
- I could never accept Christianity as true, because it is unreasonable. Anything based on blind faith is unworthy of trust.
- MiraclesUnacceptable
- How can you possibly accept that bizarre miracles took place when you know they're impossible?
- EvilInChristianity
- There is too much evil described in the Bible, or perpetrated by those who call themselves "Christians" for me to accept Christianity.
- TruthRelative
- How can you claim to have a monopoly on the truth? There are so many other beliefs in the world that more than one must be correct!
- ChristianityNew
- Christianity is a relatively new religion. How can you claim that it teaches truths that have never changed?
- ChristianityEgocentric
- The Judeo-Christian theories of Genesis are egocentric and anthropocentric, and have no application to real science.
- ConflictingTeachers
- Christianity in our time offers teachers and adherents who believe and teach conflicting doctrines. This proves that even Christians can't agree what is true.
- PersonalChoice
- I believe whatever seems right to me. Nobody else can tell me what to believe.
- FundamentalistBiblicism
- I object to the idea that we must hold to a literalistic interpretation of the Gospels (or the Bible in general), taking exactly what they say as Truth.
Coming from Christians
- ChurchAssociationUnimportant
- I believe that it doesn't really matter which church a person attends, as long as somebody teaches that Jesus is our Savior from sin, and that we are saved by God's grace alone (or another "most important doctrine" of your choice).
