I believe whatever seems right to me. Nobody else can tell me what to believe.

Literally speaking, that's not true. Anyone can tell you what to believe. Nobody can force you to listen or to believe it. You take full responsibility for any hardship or evil that will befall you as a result of what you refuse to believe. You may be just fine with that.

One of the Bible verses that gets quoted fairly often applies well. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. If you want to verify that this verse exists, you can find it twice in the Psalms: Psalm 14 and Psalm 16.

You may still be just fine with taking full responsibility for any errors in your beliefs. That's good. Just make sure you have all the facts first. Read the Gospels in the New Testament at least, in any order you wish.

Understand that the historic accounts of the Gospels are far more reliable than any other writing of the same age. They are historically reliable. To verify this, go to a reputable Classics department at a university, and ask them. Ask how certain they are that the classical writings they study have been transmitted reliably to us. Do we know that they contain what the original author wrote? Compare that evidence to the same evidence available for the New Testament scriptures. For example:

  • How many ancient copies (or versions) of the writing exist today?

  • How well do the existing versions agree with one another in content? How much do they disagree?

  • How much time passed between the writing of the manuscripts (the original writings) and the creation of the copies still in existence?

  • Since the Gospels are historical accounts, how reliable are the writers as witnesses or researchers of their subject matter?

If you seriously search out the answers to these questions, you will be glad you did. You will see how important it is not to dismiss Christianity out of hand because it may not be your initial preference.

If you want to make your research easier, read this book. But don't take my word for it. After all, you want to take responsibility for your own mistakes.
